Preparing the Next Generation of First Responders
Our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) students have been hard at work this semester, diving deep into the critical skills needed to provide lifesaving care in the field. Currently, our students are completing their Airway Management unit, where they’re learning how to assess whether a patient’s airway is open and if they are breathing adequately. They are also gaining hands-on experience in managing airways for patients who are not able to breathe on their own — a vital skill for any future EMT.
In addition to their classroom and lab work, our EMT students are finalizing the necessary requirements to begin their clinical rotations in the emergency department, where they’ll have the opportunity to apply their training in real-world medical settings under professional supervision.
Outside of the classroom, several of our students recently volunteered their time to support Bristol-Kendall Fire Department and Sandwich Fire Department during their community open house events. Our students helped educate the public about EMS operations, safety awareness, and the importance of emergency preparedness. Their willingness to give back to the community reflects the professionalism and compassion that define the EMS field.
Next week, our focus shifts to Patient Assessment, one of the most important foundations of emergency care. This section will teach students how to identify and prioritize patient needs quickly and effectively — preparing them for the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of EMS work.
