What I enjoy about welding at IVVC
By: Sam Nickels

This is the class I enjoy the most throughout the day, and I look forward to coming back
each day. It gives me the chance to be treated like an adult rather than an irresponsible kid. This
class trains me for my future, even if I don't pursue welding as a career. The projects in this
class provide a sense of accomplishment and pride as they are showcased to friends and loved
ones.
Since this class is primarily hands-on, there is minimal book work, and we spend about
90% of the time working in the shop. This allows me to finish coupons early, giving me time to
either start a project or enhance my welding skills by learning a new process, such as TIG
welding. Additionally, I am part of SkillsUSA, an organization that tests students’ abilities in their
respective classes. Through this program, I am able to compete in the welding sculpture
competition, where I am currently fabricating a Tiger P prototype German tank. I highly
recommend joining SkillsUSA if you take welding, as it helps enhance your ability to weld and
fabricate.
With a great teacher like Mr. Rodriguez—who somehow manages to tolerate us
students—getting the right guidance is key for each task. After his explanations and
demonstrations, it becomes much easier to understand the work at hand. Because of his
instruction, progress is usually quick, with the possible exception of 3F (vertical-up welding).
Additionally, we are not limited to internal projects in class; we also work on outside projects,
ranging from small screw and washer tasks to massive headache racks that students are
fabricating for their trucks.
In the end, this class is an amazing experience, even if welding isn’t your intended
career path. The flexibility with projects, hands-on learning, and the supportive environment
make welding an outstanding class to be a part of.
