Just Getting Started
The new year in Auto Body is off to a quick start. Students have been learning the basic techniques in the shop, while learning about vehicle construction and welding. Students have gotten the initial skills in prepping, sanding, bondo work, priming, and painting. In doing so the students did a couple of take-home projects this year already. The students have also begun working on a few customer vehicles. The class just completed a Toyota Tundra, began a student project 1965 Ford f-100, and began the complete color change of a Chevy HHR.
While learning basic techniques in the shop the students have completed a couple of projects that they can take home. Our Fire Science class at IVVC learns to use fire extinguishers with ones that are no longer serviceable out in the field. The Auto Body students receive the fire extinguishers once Fire Science is done with them and take them apart, do some rust repair and primed and painted them with designs. The students get to keep their extinguishers if they choose to. Along the same idea we paint Thermal Tumblers that are stainless steel. These two projects help teach a painting technique with the spray guns that is not typical but useful in certain situations. The cups get sanded, primed, and painted, then most students create a design on their cups.
The first project to come through the shop this year was a Toyota Tundra. It had a couple of minor rust spots in the wheel wells of the bed sides. Students had to cut and make a small patch of new rust-free metal. They used a panel bonding adhesive instead of welding, and attached the new metal inside the wheel well. Once secured the new metal was sanded, primed and painted. The customer was happy with the completed job.
The class has also started a 1965 Ford f-100 belonging to Sandwich student Dalton Sherman. We are working on some rust repair as well as working with our IVVC welding class to help attach a new front portion of a fender that was too damaged to repair. This project will take some time to complete. We are hoping to get most of the body work complete and if time will allow this year, the truck will be painted as well.
The Chevy HHR project is just underway. This vehicle is in good shape with minor bodywork needed. The customer had a request to repaint the whole vehicle. The customer wants this HHR to be bright pink. It is currently white and the students are working to begin the prep work and take apart the vehicle. To completely paint this vehicle pink all the doors, hood, bumpers and rear hatch/liftgate need to be removed. All the door jams, underside of the hood and liftgate need to be painted to match the pink that will be painted on the outside of the HHR. The hood and liftgate undersides have been painted pink with more to come.
Auto Body will continue to be busy for a while with the projects - along with others along the way.
